Övergivet Långskepp! Vikingarna åker hem!

A band of roving Swedish Vikings have left their replica Viking longboat in a bay exposed to the extremes of Shetland weather. The nine-strong crew of the 18-tonne "Skibladner" ditched an attempt to retrace the epic voyage of their ancestors across the Atlantic and anchored the vessel close to Jarlshof in the West Voe of Sumburgh. The men who arrived in Lerwick on 21st June, disbanded at the weekend after weather conditions delayed the journey from Stockholm to Newfoundland. The skipper of "Skibladner", Henrik Ortenblad claimed the vessel was the largest replica longboat in the world. "Norrona" on Tuesday and two departed for Foula. Mr. Ortenblad left the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen on Monday but will remain in Shetland in the hope of finding a new crew. Mark Donaldson, proprietor of the Sumburgh Hotel, which overlooks the voe, said the skipper planned to return with the vessel to Lerwick to shelter from gales. "I spoke to the captain yesterday and he's hoping to take her into Lerwick. There's no problem with the weather at the moment but there is a gale forecast for the first of the week. Skepparen på "Skibladner", Henrik Ortenblad, förklarade att fartyget var den största långskepps replikan i världen. Besättningen lämnade skeppet och splittrades mot Norden och två mot ön Foula. Ortenblad lämnade Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen på måndagen men kommer att stanna på Shetland för att försöka få tag på ny besättning. Mark Donaldson, föreståndare på Sumburgh Hotel, som överblickar viken sade att skepparen planerar att återvända till skeppet för att ta det till Lerwickför skydd mot stormarna. "Jag pratade med kaptenen i går och han hoppas kunna ta skeppet till Lerwick. Det är inga problem med vädret nu men det kan komma en storm i början på nästa vecka. Det är han väl medveten om."
